DIMINUTIVE DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE:
The assignment objective is to effectively communicate a message when restricted to a diminutive format that is explicit and visually engaging. The growth of miniaturization of products, such as an Apple Watch, although limited in surface area, must maintain readability, legibility, and user interface functionality.
The tiny scale of a USPS stamp design will serve as the unique design challenge of effectively conveying a message in a very small format while still maintaining readability and legibility to visually convey a message.
A country is the originator of postage stamps, and the government has ultimate control over the messaging. However, the introduction of custom stamp design by the USPS provides individuals, organizations, businesses, the freedom to develop a visual solution for branding, campaigns, events, social causes, public service, fundraising, independent of governmental brand message perception standards.
Develop an understanding of diminutive design and application of design principles to create a series of four postage stamps that effectively communicate, commemorate, or celebrate a topic, event, or subject of interest through the primary use of illustration within one graphic classification of postage stamp design.
Graphic classifications of stamp design:
Portrait bust - profile or full-face
Emblem - coat of arms, flag, national symbol
Numeric -a design built around the numeral value
