Pittsburgh Playing Cards
Project Overview
Pittsburgh Playing Cards is a fictional playing card deck inspired by Pittsburgh’s history and visual identity. The design draws inspiration from Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne, incorporating their historic geometric forms and Pittsburgh’s black-and-gold color palette into a modern card system.
The Brief
The goal was to design a complete deck of playing cards with a strong Pittsburgh-inspired visual style. The design needed to maintain consistency across the individual cards, packaging, and supporting elements while remaining functional and recognizable as a standard deck of playing cards.
My Approach
I developed a bold black-and-gold visual system inspired by Fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne, using simplified geometric shapes based on the distinctive layouts and forms associated with Pittsburgh’s historic forts. These shapes were integrated into the card faces, suit symbols, typography, and packaging to create a cohesive visual identity. The finished designs were also presented through realistic product mockups.
